Speakers
Jeff Weigand – Administrator, WI Dept. of Safety and Professional Services and
Tom Engels – Assistant Deputy Secretary, WI Dept. of Safety and Professional Services will be speaking
on Act 270.
Act 270 is the result of the fire chiefs lobbying at the 11th hour to remove suppression and detection
from the guise of the Uniform Building Code. Essentially, Wisconsin thought it would be best to adopt
and detection of fires removed as they wanted to remain the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)in
their respective communities.
Act 270 impacts any business operating in the State of Wisconsin that must conform to multiple codes
and regulations. The impact this has on our industry is that rather than having one set of rules, we
have to abide by many.
Act 270 provides a council to regulate those rules and provides guidelines and a stipulation that any
proposed requirements in communities that supersedes the state regulations must be submitted,
approved and published by the state. In short, that portion of the act keeps the local guys from
becoming dictators.
In addition, they will be discussing the new Uniform Commercial Building Code and the most frequent
“pet peeves” found by inspectors.
